The basic principle is that minors should await trial in freedom. At the same time, this does not always happen when there is serious suspicion. The judge then finds it necessary to place a minor in a juvenile detention center.
Underage suspects are placed in what is known as a juvenile correctional institution (JJI). These facilities are designed for young people between the ages of 12 and 18 (sometimes extended to 23) who are suspected of a criminal offense or who have received a sentence, such as juvenile detention or another measure, for example, the PIJ measure (Placement in an Institution for Juveniles, also known as juvenile TB).
There are different types of juvenile correctional facilities, depending on the severity of the measure and the needs of the young person. Within these facilities, young people receive counseling, education, and therapy, with the goal of changing their behavior and helping them successfully return to society after their sentence.
