Life sentence for Ridouan Taghi and two others in Marengo trial

Ridouan Taghi must be jailed for life. That is what the Amsterdam court ruled in the much-discussed Marengo trial. In addition to Taghi, two more suspects have received life sentences: Saïd R. and Mario R.

The judge ruled today after a trial of nearly six years and 142 days of sessions. The case involves six murders committed between 2015 and 2017, four attempted murders and preparations for more liquidations.

Seventeen suspects are on trial in the Marengo trial, with Ridouan Taghi the prime suspect. The prosecution (OM) had demanded life imprisonment against him. The court concluded that Taghi was the "undisputed leader" of a criminal organization. He used "extreme violence to frighten people," according to the judge. And that "terror exercised by him" was effective, the judge stated.

It is plausible, according to the judge, that Taghi would order murders again if he were released. "For retribution and security of society, only life imprisonment is appropriate," he said.

The prosecution had also demanded life imprisonment against Mohamed R., Mao R. and Achraf B. The latter faces more than 29 years in prison. Mohamed R. receives 27 years and Mao R. 15 years.

Important during the trial were the statements of key witness Nabil B. He was given a 10-year prison sentence: a steep discount in exchange for the incriminating statements he made about his co-defendants.

Actually, a 20-year prison sentence was reasonable for B., the judge argued. But: "You fulfilled your part of the agreement." Therefore, a reduction of the sentence by half was justified, according to the judge.

The sentences for the remaining defendants range from about two years to 23 years in prison. These sentences are all lower than the prosecution had demanded, in part because the trial "took too long," according to the judge. The trial should have been completed after four years, the judge stated.

In podcast De Dag, lawyer Hettie Cremers gives an inside look at the EBI in Vught, the place where Ridouan Taghi is being held and where other well-known criminals such as Willem Holleeder, Mohammed B. and Gökmen T. are staying. The regime there is extremely strict. Yesterday's episode features an overview of the crucial moments in the Marengo trial. You can listen to podcast The Day here listen.

During the proceedings of the Marengo trial, three murders were committed. These liquidations are not part of the trial, but it is generally believed that these murders are related to the statements of star witness Nabil B.

A week after Nabil B. was announced as a star witness, his brother was shot dead. In September 2019, his lawyer Derk Wiersum was murdered, and in the summer of 2021, Peter R. de Vries was shot dead. He was confidant of the crown witness.
