The appeals court sentenced John S. to 30 years in prison and tbs with compulsory treatment. S. killed a shoemaker in Vlissingen and a girl and a woman at a care farm in Alblasserdam in 2022.
On May 4 of that year, S. shot and killed the shoemaker in Flushing, he said, to test his newly acquired weapon. Two days later killed him on care farm Tro Tardi, a 34-year-old employee and a 16-year-old girl who was a guest there. S. was arrested shortly after the attack in a park in Alblasserdam; he had called 112 himself and confessed immediately.
TBS
The prosecution demanded 30 years in prison with tbs in court last year. However, the judge felt that a temporary sentence would not do justice to the crimes committed and therefore decided on a life imprisonment impose.
S. could thus ask for a reassessment after 25 years. That was too great a risk for the prosecution. Therefore, the on appeal. Before the court, the justice argued that S. is a man "seriously ill on a mental level."
Impaired accountability
According to experts at the Pieter Baan Center, S. is diminished culpability for his actions. The likelihood that he will reoffend is high. Therefore, the experts say it is important to keep a close eye on the man, and this can be done by imposing tbs with compulsory treatment.
The prosecution again demanded 30 years of tbs with mandatory treatment. So now the court adopts that demand, writes Omroep Zeeland. "We find your actions so heinous that retribution must come first," said the court president. "You have deeply shocked not only these people but all of society with your actions." The tbs goes into effect after S. serves his prison sentence.
