The 47-year-old Mehrdad D. S. from Capelle aan den IJssel heard today 10 years in prison against him. The Capelle man is said to have severely wounded his wife's lover with four stabbings on February 14 - Valentine's Day - on the Mombassaplaats in Rotterdam-Oosterflank.
A knife stab hit the victim - 57-year-old Ali Fotowatikha - so deeply that he died of his injuries a day later at the hospital. The victim and the suspect are from Iran and had been friends for 30 years. The day of the stabbing both spent at the Capellenaar's allotment garden on Copper Path in Prince Alexander.
Mehrdad D. S. had been living for some time in discord with his wife, whom he had previously allegedly abused. The 18-year-old daughter of defendant and his wife reported the domestic violence to the police. She later also distributed telephone conversations between her mother and the later victim, in which the family problems were discussed.
Upon this, the suspect reported to the daughter and an acquaintance in The Hague that the victim was chasing his wife and that he would "catch" him. His daughter still warned the victim by phone, but the victim was already outside the apartment when the suspect arrived there in the evening. The Capellenaar had parked his car 200 meters from the flat and several witnesses saw him run away after 'screaming'.
The suspect claims that he was at the apartment and saw two men running toward the victim and that he then fled "terrified. He drove to The Hague, where the aforementioned acquaintance threw away his clothes. A day later, the Capellenaar attempted suicide.
According to the prosecutor, it wasn't real. ''He only did it to pressure his daughter so that she would not tell the truth,'' the prosecutor said. She finds defendant guilty of a "horrific ruthless act" committed out of jealousy. The Capellen man later fled to Iran, but after mediation by his counsel, he returned to the Netherlands and reported to the police.
Verdict in two weeks.
